Tips for Remodeling Your Master Bedroom

Your master bedroom is a super important living space – you spend almost a third or more of your entire day in there after all! And unlike other sections of your home that you may simply be “tolerating”, a master bedroom is supposed to be inviting, cozy, comfortable, and relaxing. Having a cramped, poor layout with insufficient space is a damper not just on the mood – it could be impacting your sleep as well.

We’ve done a number of master bedroom remodels…

Like… A lot.

We’ve seen bedrooms of every configuration and size, and have done a wide variety of master bedroom remodels in Minnesota and the Midwest, and we know what makes a master bedroom “shine”. So, if you’re considering getting your bedroom remodeled this season, here are a few crucial tips to consider!

Remodeling Your Master Bedroom: 3 Tips

It’s not easy to pull the trigger on a remodeling project! We get it. The price is a significant factor, and it’s also a major life decision to step away from your master bedroom for a few weeks while it gets remodeled.

However, we can speak from experience – it’s well worth it. Seeing the look on homeowner’s face as they see the grand reveal of their newly remodeled master bedroom is priceless. It’s an emotional experience because, well, it’s a huge part of your life!

So, if you’re ready to start a remodeling project on your master bedroom, these are 3 tips to keep in mind:

1) All About That Space

One of the most common complaints from homeowners is that they feel their master bedroom is too small. It feels cramped, inefficient, and it’s simply not a cozy or relaxing environment.

If you feel like you’re always tripping over stuff because you don’t have enough room in your master bedroom, getting a remodel may be the right call. But how a remodel increases the size of your room will depend on a lot of factors that are unique to your home.

You can add space by ripping out interior walls, adding onto your own house’s footprint, or even adding an additional story above (essentially, raising the ceiling). If adding additional home to your lot is an option, building out the back of your room is a great way to expand the amount of space in your master bedroom. Also, simple tasks such as redoing the layout of a room’s construction can often bring in the needed space to make your room comfortable!

2) Redesigning for a Timeless Look

While remodeling is largely focused on design, you have to recognize that the aesthetic of a room often serves a practical purpose as well. Many American’s have difficulty sleeping, and much of this has to do with the environment you’re in.

If you moved into a home with an outdated master bedroom, chances are it’s difficult to feel comfortable and relaxed in there. If you plan on redesigning, a great way to get a “new” look in the room while keeping the value of your home is to redesign with a timeless look in mind!

Timeless looks often involve simple, elegant colors that can be customized by your own addition. In other words, it’s not about the color or type of flooring, layout, paint, or lighting situation. It’s about creating a “canvas” for your room. Use simple brights and darks on the walls, and make the focal point of your master bedroom remodel to maximize the potential of your bedroom space. Let the seasonal and year-by-year design trends dictate the décor you use to keep your master bedroom timeless!

3) Remodeling For Aging Preparation

None of us want to admit it… but we’re all getting older. And with old age comes the inevitable walker or wheelchair (I know, I know, you don’t want to think about that right now). But even if you’re not close enough for either of those yet, you want a home that requires you to move things an absolute minimum. Regardless of age, reordering furniture is an exhausting task for anyone.

Remodeling your master bedroom not only offers the opportunity to increase the space of your bedroom – it may allow for a redesign of the current layout, making it a more welcome home to age in. Regardless of what comes your way as you live in your house, you want a home that can adjust as you age to always be comfortable and practical for your living situation!
