Room to Park, Store and Live

A Minnesota winter makes the case for a garage on its own. But a garage addition does more than keep frost off the windshield — it absorbs the bikes, the tools, the lawn equipment, and the seasonal clutter that would otherwise fill your basement.

Build the right one and you get a second floor almost for free. Stonehearth designs garage additions that match the roofline, siding, and trim of the existing house, so the result reads as original rather than bolted on.

Types of Garage Additions We Build

Attached or detached, one stall or four — here’s where most garage projects land.

01

Attached Garage Additions

The most common request, and the most convenient: walk from the car into the house without stepping outside. Usually paired with a mudroom or entry remodel.

02

Detached Garages

Better when setbacks, the driveway, or the shape of the house rule out an attached build — and the easier route to a workshop or a studio above.

03

Garage Expansions

Going from two stalls to three, deepening a shallow garage for a truck, or widening it so the doors actually open with cars inside.

04

Living Space Above

A bedroom suite, office, studio, or in-law suite over the garage, reached from inside the house or its own staircase.

05

Mudrooms & Breezeways

The connection matters as much as the garage. A mudroom with lockers, benches, and a drop zone is where a Minnesota winter actually gets handled.

Our Process,
Your Peace of Mind

01

Initial Consultation

We start by listening — how you use your home, what isn’t working, and the budget you’re working with — before a single line is drawn.
02

Design & Selections

Work with our in-house designer on the stall count, the door and window placement, the connection to the house, and the siding and roof details that make the garage match what’s already there.
03

Build & Communication

A detailed contract, a clear timeline, and a project app that keeps every document and update in one place. You’ll always know what’s next.
04

Final Walkthrough

We don’t call a garage finished until you love every inch of it — and we stand behind the work long after the last detail is done.

Is a Garage Addition Right for You?

A garage is one of the few additions that pays you back in daily convenience from the first winter. It’s worth considering if:

  • You’re scraping windshields every morning. Covered parking protects your vehicles from snow, hail, and falling branches, and saves you the scraping.
  • Your basement is doing a garage’s job. Move the tools, tires, and seasonal gear out and the basement is suddenly worth finishing.
  • You want a workshop or studio. An insulated, heated garage is the cheapest square footage you can build for projects that don’t belong in the house.
  • You need the space above more than the space below. Building the garage is how you get a second-floor suite, office, or playroom onto the lot.
  • You’re thinking about resale. In this climate, a garage is close to an expectation. Adding one widens the pool of buyers if you ever do sell.

What to Plan For in a Garage Addition

Garages look simple and are governed by more rules than almost anything else we build. We work through all of this before design is finished:

  • Setbacks and lot coverage: every city caps how much of your lot can be built on and how close to the property line a garage can sit.
  • Driveway and approach: where the garage goes decides where the driveway goes — and whether you can actually turn into it.
  • Grading and drainage: a new slab changes how water moves across the lot. Getting it wrong puts that water against your foundation.
  • Foundation: if you want living space above, the footings and frost walls have to be designed for it from the start. Adding it later is far more expensive.
  • Insulation and heat: an attached garage against living space, or a heated workshop, changes the insulation and fire-separation requirements.
  • Matching the house: siding, roof pitch, trim, and window proportions are what make the difference between an addition and an afterthought.

Working with the folks at Stonehearth and with their contractors was an excellent experience. Everyone was a pleasure to work with and always conscious of the details and quality of the work. All minor delays and added costs were completely justified and we never felt like they were trying to add anything unnecessary , which hasn't always been the case in my experience with home remodeling. Stonehearth is one of the good ones and I totally recommend them.

-Second Review after deck project (below) Back again with a review of the GREAT work by Stonehearth. We worked with Stonehearth on a project to rebuild our deck and once again, everything turn out GREAT! We got multiple bids and learned a lot along the way about decks but went with Stonehearth because on more than one visit they presented multiple options, brought out a carpenter to help us make decisions and were very responsive to texts, calls and emails. The work itself started as scheduled and went as planned. Pat & Mark who did the work are terrific guys and tolerated me poking my head around the corner to see what was going on. We also chose Stonehearth because we worked with them before on our kitchen remodel so we knew they would give us a fair bid and the work would be excellent. All turned out to be true. I would have hesitation recommending Stonehearth to family, friends or anyone. -Original Review after Kitchen Remodel (below) We hired StoneHearth for our kitchen remodeling project and everything turned out GREAT! My wife and I had been talking and planning this project for a couple of years so had a lot of specific goals including sourcing the wood for the cabinets and floor from a friend of ours who has a farm and sawmill. The people at StoneHearth listened to our plans & goals and didn’t immediately say “no” but said they would see what could be done. They listened to our ideas and did not say ‘it can’t be done or that’s too hard’. In the end StoneHearth was the only contractor who was willing to include our wood in the project as well as the other aspects of our plan. During the project all the milestones were met on time and as specified. StoneHearth has access to excellent tradesmen who did great work. Everything fits, functions and looks terrific. Communication and coordination was masterfully managed via email, text and a contractor website where everyone could review milestones, emails, photos and documents. True transparency! This is the first project where I can say that everything completed as specified, on schedule and we were still good friends when we reached the finish line. I give StoneHearth my highest recommendation. They are true professions!
