Bathroom Additions in the Twin Cities
Stonehearth Remodeling adds bathrooms where there weren’t any — finding the space in older Twin Cities homes and building a second, third, or primary bath that looks original to the house.
One More Bathroom, One Less Morning Rush
Plenty of well-loved Twin Cities homes were built with a single bathroom. That works until the household grows, a parent moves in, or everyone needs to be out the door at the same time.
Adding a bathroom is different from remodeling one: the plumbing, venting, and floor framing all have to be created rather than reused. We find the space, run the services, and finish it so it reads as part of the original house.
Plan Your Bathroom →Bathrooms We Add
Where the new bathroom goes depends on who needs it and how often.
Primary En Suites
A private bathroom off the primary bedroom, usually carved from a closet, a spare bedroom, or a small bump-out. The single most requested addition we build.
Second Full Bathrooms
The fix for a one-bathroom house. A second full bath with a tub or shower takes the pressure off every weekday morning.
Powder Rooms
A half bath near the entry or the kitchen. It needs very little space — often under a staircase — and changes how comfortable it is to have guests over.
Lower-Level Bathrooms
A bathroom makes a finished basement genuinely usable, and it’s essential if the lower level will ever host guests.
Suite & Addition Bathrooms
The bathroom inside a larger project — an in-law suite, a second story, or a new wing.

Finding Room for a New Bathroom
A bathroom needs less space than most people assume. These are the places we usually find it:
- A large closet or a spare bedroom. The most common source, and the cheapest, because the floor and walls are already there.
- Under the stairs. Awkward for anything else, and exactly the right size for a powder room.
- Back-to-back with existing plumbing. Putting the new bathroom against a kitchen or bathroom wall keeps the pipe runs short and the cost down.
- A small bump-out. Pushing the exterior wall out a few feet is often enough for a full bath, and far cheaper than a full addition.
- The lower level. Below the sewer line it needs an ejector pump, which is routine — we plan for it rather than discovering it.
- Inside a larger addition. If you’re already building, adding the bathroom at the same time costs a fraction of doing it separately later.
What to Plan For in a Bathroom Addition
Nearly everything that makes a bathroom addition harder than a remodel is hidden behind the walls. Here’s what we work out first:
- Supply and waste lines: a new bathroom needs hot and cold water in and a drain out, and the drain has to fall at the right slope the whole way.
- Venting: every new fixture needs a vent to the roof. On an interior wall in an older house, routing it is often the real constraint.
- Floor framing: a filled soaking tub is heavy. We check the joists below before the tub is chosen, not after.
- Water heater capacity: an extra shower can outrun the existing heater. Sometimes the answer is a bigger tank, sometimes a tankless unit.
- Electrical and ventilation: dedicated GFCI circuits, proper lighting, and an exhaust fan ducted outside — not into the attic.
- Waterproofing: the membrane behind the tile is what decides whether the bathroom is still sound in fifteen years. It is not the place to save money.

Working with the folks at Stonehearth and with their contractors was an excellent experience. Everyone was a pleasure to work with and always conscious of the details and quality of the work. All minor delays and added costs were completely justified and we never felt like they were trying to add anything unnecessary , which hasn't always been the case in my experience with home remodeling. Stonehearth is one of the good ones and I totally recommend them.Posted on Google![]()

-Second Review after deck project (below) Back again with a review of the GREAT work by Stonehearth. We worked with Stonehearth on a project to rebuild our deck and once again, everything turn out GREAT! We got multiple bids and learned a lot along the way about decks but went with Stonehearth because on more than one visit they presented multiple options, brought out a carpenter to help us make decisions and were very responsive to texts, calls and emails. The work itself started as scheduled and went as planned. Pat & Mark who did the work are terrific guys and tolerated me poking my head around the corner to see what was going on. We also chose Stonehearth because we worked with them before on our kitchen remodel so we knew they would give us a fair bid and the work would be excellent. All turned out to be true. I would have hesitation recommending Stonehearth to family, friends or anyone. -Original Review after Kitchen Remodel (below) We hired StoneHearth for our kitchen remodeling project and everything turned out GREAT! My wife and I had been talking and planning this project for a couple of years so had a lot of specific goals including sourcing the wood for the cabinets and floor from a friend of ours who has a farm and sawmill. The people at StoneHearth listened to our plans & goals and didn’t immediately say “no” but said they would see what could be done. They listened to our ideas and did not say ‘it can’t be done or that’s too hard’. In the end StoneHearth was the only contractor who was willing to include our wood in the project as well as the other aspects of our plan. During the project all the milestones were met on time and as specified. StoneHearth has access to excellent tradesmen who did great work. Everything fits, functions and looks terrific. Communication and coordination was masterfully managed via email, text and a contractor website where everyone could review milestones, emails, photos and documents. True transparency! This is the first project where I can say that everything completed as specified, on schedule and we were still good friends when we reached the finish line. I give StoneHearth my highest recommendation. They are true professions!Posted on Google![]()
