In-Law Suites in the Twin Cities
Stonehearth Remodeling builds in-law suites that keep family close without putting anyone on top of each other — private, accessible, and designed to still make sense in twenty years.
Room for Family, Close but Independent
More Twin Cities families are living under one roof again — aging parents, adult children, a relative who needs help nearby. It works when everyone keeps some privacy, and it strains when they don’t.
An in-law suite is the difference. A bedroom, a full bathroom, a living area, and usually a kitchenette, laid out so your family and theirs can share a house without sharing a morning routine. We design them to be comfortable now and still workable as needs change.
Plan Your In-Law Suite →Where an In-Law Suite Can Go
The right location depends on your lot, your house, and how much independence everyone wants.
Main-Floor Suites
The most accessible option, and the one that lasts longest. No stairs to climb, close to the rest of the household, and easy to adapt for a walker or wheelchair later.
Lower-Level Suites
A walkout basement makes a generous suite with its own entrance and daylight — often the most space for the money.
Above-Garage Suites
Private and separated by a floor, reached by its own staircase. Best for a guest who doesn’t need step-free access — often paired with a garage addition.
Attached Additions
A purpose-built wing with its own entrance, built to match the house. The most flexible option when the existing floor plan has nothing to spare.
Detached ADUs
A separate dwelling on the same lot, where city rules allow it. We build these too — see our ADU work.

What Goes Into an In-Law Suite
Every suite is different, but most of ours include some version of the following:
- A private entrance. Being able to come and go without walking through someone else’s living room is most of what makes this work.
- A bedroom and a full bathroom. Curbless shower, grab-bar blocking in the walls, and a wider doorway, whether or not they’re needed yet.
- A kitchenette. Sink, under-counter refrigerator, microwave, and counter space — enough for breakfast and a cup of tea without the full second kitchen.
- A living area. Somewhere to sit that isn’t the bedroom, so visitors can be received without the whole household joining in.
- Laundry within reach. Either in the suite or on the same level, so nobody is carrying a basket up a flight of stairs.
- Sound separation. Insulated walls and solid-core doors between the suite and the main house, which matters more than almost anyone expects.
What to Plan For in Your In-Law Suite
An in-law suite has to satisfy your family and your city. We work through both before design is final:
- Zoning and ADU rules: whether a second kitchen, a second entrance, or a separate dwelling is allowed depends entirely on your city and your parcel.
- Egress and safety: any bedroom needs a code-compliant exit, which in a lower level means a proper egress window and window well.
- Accessibility now and later: step-free entry, 36-inch doorways, and blocking behind the bathroom walls cost very little during the build and a great deal afterwards.
- Heating and cooling: a separate zone lets one household run warm and the other cool without a negotiation every evening.
- Future use: plan the suite so it can become a guest wing, a home office, or rentable space if the family situation changes.
- Resale: a well-built suite is an asset. One improvised out of a basement corner without permits is a problem at closing.

Working with the folks at Stonehearth and with their contractors was an excellent experience. Everyone was a pleasure to work with and always conscious of the details and quality of the work. All minor delays and added costs were completely justified and we never felt like they were trying to add anything unnecessary , which hasn't always been the case in my experience with home remodeling. Stonehearth is one of the good ones and I totally recommend them.Posted on Google![]()

-Second Review after deck project (below) Back again with a review of the GREAT work by Stonehearth. We worked with Stonehearth on a project to rebuild our deck and once again, everything turn out GREAT! We got multiple bids and learned a lot along the way about decks but went with Stonehearth because on more than one visit they presented multiple options, brought out a carpenter to help us make decisions and were very responsive to texts, calls and emails. The work itself started as scheduled and went as planned. Pat & Mark who did the work are terrific guys and tolerated me poking my head around the corner to see what was going on. We also chose Stonehearth because we worked with them before on our kitchen remodel so we knew they would give us a fair bid and the work would be excellent. All turned out to be true. I would have hesitation recommending Stonehearth to family, friends or anyone. -Original Review after Kitchen Remodel (below) We hired StoneHearth for our kitchen remodeling project and everything turned out GREAT! My wife and I had been talking and planning this project for a couple of years so had a lot of specific goals including sourcing the wood for the cabinets and floor from a friend of ours who has a farm and sawmill. The people at StoneHearth listened to our plans & goals and didn’t immediately say “no” but said they would see what could be done. They listened to our ideas and did not say ‘it can’t be done or that’s too hard’. In the end StoneHearth was the only contractor who was willing to include our wood in the project as well as the other aspects of our plan. During the project all the milestones were met on time and as specified. StoneHearth has access to excellent tradesmen who did great work. Everything fits, functions and looks terrific. Communication and coordination was masterfully managed via email, text and a contractor website where everyone could review milestones, emails, photos and documents. True transparency! This is the first project where I can say that everything completed as specified, on schedule and we were still good friends when we reached the finish line. I give StoneHearth my highest recommendation. They are true professions!Posted on Google![]()
